Jewelry is an important part of an ensemble. Our everyday outfits look better when we wear jewels and we need to put in an extra amount of effort in caring for them. The following are a few tips that can help you do so.
- Clean your jewelry
We wear our jewelry at different types of the day and it is only natural that our gems collect dust, dirt, grime or makeup. To keep our jewelry clean and shiny then it is important to clean them often. One way to do this is to use warm water and a mild soap in order to gently clean away all the dirt on your jewelry. For any makeup or grime that might be stuck in between the jewelry crevices, then it is best to use a very soft brush to clean your pieces. This is due to the fact that the metal surfaces or gems can easily scratch or discolor and thus have to be cleaned gently.
- Store them safely
Most of us just get home after a long day, tired and exhausted. We take off our jewelry and toss it in a drawer or on the shelves without a care in the world. This might cause damage to the jewelry which is quite delicate. Tossing it anywhere and everywhere can cause the surfaces to get scratched or can even lead to the chipping of some precious stones we may have. The best way to store jewelry is to keep it in the jewelry boxes and tuck it safely away. Avoid storing metallic pieces in humid places since this will cause them to tarnish and get discolored.
- Repair your jewelry
More often than not, our jewelry gets damaged. For instance, the clasp of a perfectly good necklace may come off or one of the gems in a bracelet may detach from the rest of the piece. Most times when this happens we tend to throw away the jewelry after rendering it useless. Other times we ignore the damaged part and proceed to wear our pieces like nothing happened. The best course of action to take after something happens to our jewelry is to take it to a jeweler for repair before any more elements fall off or before any more damage occurs to them.
- Store it away from direct sunlight
Direct sunlight can cause a lot of damage to jewelry. For instance, for gems such as amethyst and topaz can fade when exposed to sunlight. Other types of jewelry such as ivory bleach and lose their color due to the same exposure to sunlight. In order to maintain the natural and beautiful color of all your different types of jewelry, it is best to store them safely away from sunlight.
- Be careful when dressing up
When going out, take extra care when dressing up. Always ensure that you put on your jewelry last after wearing your clothes in order to avoid the tangling of your pieces with your clothes. Apply your perfumes, oils and lotions and then afterwards put on your jewelry in order to avoid reducing the shine on jewelry such as diamonds and gold.
