Every comic-book fan had dreams of being a superhero when they were younger. We would sit at the window in our cape and costume and wish for the signal to dash out and save the world. Unfortunately, for all-too-many of us, this dream never came true, but our vigilante desires so not have to lie dormant.
Just as the video game industry allowed everyone to live out their greatest fantasies, from being a football superstar, saving the Medieval world from dragons and battling aeons-old demons, the superhero itch can also be scratched.
There have been plenty of superhero games released over the past forty or so years. Some have had more success than others but no matter what hero graces our consoles, fans are flocking to live out their childhood dreams time and time again.
And 2018 has a whole host of comic-book inspired video games to be released this year. The fourth and fifth instalment of Telltale’s Batman game have been or soon will be released. Another Telltale title to watch out for is their rendition of The Walking Dead saga, with the final chapter being released later this year.
But what is most interesting is the number of Marvel titles that look to be hitting the shelves inspiring our imaginations throughout the year. We have already had the interest piqued by this month’s release of Black Panther, and while we might not see a solely Wakanda-based video game for consoles just yet, rest assured that there will be other opportunities to play as all your favourite heroes, and surely some of your favourite villains, too.
Already announced is the likes of Spiderman and Marvel Strike Force, which will come out this year, we’re just not sure when, exactly. Even more interesting are reports of an untitled Marvel project, created by Square Enix, the same guys who develop the Final Fantasy series.
Speaking of which, as you wait for what will surely be a game to remember, the recently released Final Fantasy 15 is now available on mobile and can be downloaded and purchased by following this link, finalfantasyxvapp.com/. While it may not be part of the Marvel universe, it can give you a little taste of what to expect from the game designers when this mystery Marvel project does finally hit the shelves.
While we don’t know too much – and almost nothing at all – about the releases this year, you can expect that there will be something for everyone. Whether you enjoy the realistic grittiness of the Batman titles or the more absurd and intergalactic instalments of the Marvel universe the right game for you is coming to both physical and digital stores soon enough.
Whatever your loyalty, whether it be Marvel, DC, or even if you’re into manga and anime, you will be able to find something that tickles your fancy and keeps you up way too late this year. Life may suck every now and again, but finding your escape through games and the fantastical world of comic books can help you forget about it, just for a little bit, at least.
